About

ZIS, which stands for ZiS (Zavod imeni Stalina), was a Soviet automotive company that operated from 1930 to 1956. It was initially named AMO (Avtomobilnoe Moskovskoe Obshchestvo) and later changed its name to ZIS in 1931 in honour of Joseph Stalin. ZIS was primarily known for the production of luxury cars and limousines that were used by high-ranking Soviet officials, government dignitaries, and state enterprises. The company produced various models, including sedans, convertibles, and armoured vehicles. One of the most famous models produced by ZIS is the ZIS-110, which was in production from 1945 to 1958. This large and luxurious limousine featured a powerful engine, a spacious interior, and elegant styling. It became a symbol of Soviet automotive excellence and was often used for official state functions. After the death of Stalin in 1953, the company was renamed ZIL (Zavod imeni Likhachova) and continued to produce luxury cars until the collapse of the Soviet Union. ZIL later shifted its focus to the production of commercial trucks and other specialized vehicles.
